The stands not only help create the perfect configuration for the aquarium, but they also protect the tank and showcase it for better visual appreciation.
Beginners in the hobby of fish keeping usually place their aquariums on a piece of furniture or on any existing table. This practice not only interferes with viewing but also puts the tank in danger. More often, aquarium stands are not a priority on an owner’s shopping list and this equipment is overlooked while purchasing tanks and fish. Owners then buy stands after the aquarium has been set up. However, if the tank and stands are bought all at once, not only will the stands be a perfect match for the size and weight of the tank, but the whole package will probably cost less than if purchased separately.
Aquarium stands are mainly available in two styles – stands and cabinets. A stand is a piece of furniture consisting of four legs and is ideal for smaller tanks. It is common for beginners to choose this style because it is cheaper and easier to set up; however, if the tank is larger or heavier, a four-legged stand won’t be able to provide the needed stability.
Cabinet styles offer more support and storage space. In choosing a style, remember that the stands should go well with the trim of the tank, and that the height should primarily be considered. Keep in mind that the more angles your aquarium is visible to people, the better. Wood, wood byproducts or metal are often used to make aquarium stands.
Cheap stands are usually made of metal, either iron or steel. Because metal rusts, it is not recommended for saltwater tanks, and while metal stands are cheap, they do not come in cabinet styles and do not offer maximum support for your tank. Cabinet styles made of wood and wood byproduct provide more support. Between wood and wood byproducts though, wood is still the best choice because pressed board or fiberboard stands swell and weaken if improperly drilled on.
